Vonnie L. Scarpetta

December 29, 1935 — March 27, 2024

Rockford

Vonnie L. Scarpetta, 88, of Rockford, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many, passed away on March 27, 2024, at OSF Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. Vonnie was born on December 29, 1935, in Phil Campbell, Alabama. The daughter of Harley and Lillie (Graves) McMurry. She married Angelo Scarpetta in 1960. They shared 49 years of marriage before his passing in 2009. Although staying true to her Irish spirit, she embraced her husband's Italian heritage with open arms. Vonnie converted to Catholicism and was a long-time parishioner at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, where she and Angelo wed. She was also a loyal member of The Altar & Rosary Society at St. Anthony of Padua church. Vonnie was a dedicated member of the St. Ambrogio Society for over 20 years. Vonnie also enjoyed her involvement in the Verdi Club, where she shared her passion for community and fellowship. She had a special bond with her grandson, Mitchell. They spent many hours together enjoying quality time, going out for lunch, and watching movies. Mitchell was indeed the apple of Vonnie's eye. In addition to her devotion to family, Vonnie had various interests that brought her joy. She enjoyed shopping, cooking for her family, and honing her skills at bocce ball. Vonnie's departure has left a void in the hearts of those who knew her. Still, all who had the privilege of being part of her life's journey will forever cherish her memory.

She will be missed by those who loved her most, her children Angela (Harry) Turner and Michael Scarpetta (Jacquelyn Nguyen); her grandson Mitchell Edgecomb, her sister Jean Clark, who shared many cherished memories with her; her Brother-in-law Ted Berg and numerous nieces and nephews, who were all dear to her. She is predeceased by her husband Angelo; her parents; siblings Dolan (Wetha) McMurry, Ruby Jones, Barney (Martha) McMurry, Peggy (Jack) Smith, Joyce Berg, and Frances (Steve) Saarinen; her brother-in-law Bob Clark.
