Virginia “Ginny” Smith, 99, died peacefully at Saint Anne Center on January 29, 2021. Virginia spent her entire life in Rockford, retiring from the Valspar Corporation, and spent her retirement in service to others. She considered it a privilege to assist the residents at St. Anne: transporting them to Mass, service as Eucharist Minister, delivering the mail and filling in wherever she was needed. She spent many hours maintaining the gardens for the resident’s enjoyment. She also volunteered in the gift shop at Rockford Health Systems for more than 40 years. She was an Affiliate of the Servants of the Holy Heart of Mary. Ginny’s favorite volunteer job was as an adopted grandmother to Kate and Bryan Nelson.
Ginny will forever be remembered by her close friends Dennis and Mary Nelson, Pat and Cindy Hazen, Joe and Mary Ellen Hazen, and all their children, her gardening buddy, Lori Rogers, her friend Chris Peterson and her neighbors at Siena on Brendenwood, where she has lived since 1993. She was predeceased by her brother, John Buhmeyer and a multitude of friends.
A private Mass will take place for Ginny with interment at Willwood Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pastoral Care at St. Anne Center. To send online condolences, please visit www.fitzgeraldfh.com
