Velma J. Stanton, 80, of Rockford, passed away at home on April 8, 2023. She was born on January 27, 1943, in Dizney, Kentucky, the daughter of Luther and Roxy (Newman) Johnson. She married Edward “Ed” Stanton on December 28, 1968, in downtown Chicago. She enjoyed quilting, decorating and spending time with her family. She loved gardening and dancing with her husband. She owned her own craft store in Paris, Tennessee before retiring. Velma was extremely loving, funny and outgoing. She was known by her family for her love of music, and really enjoyed being around her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by those who loved her most, her husband, Ed; children, Cindy (Leon) Mayberry, Sandy (John) Rabenda, Barb (Dave) Hovey, Rina Rogers, Pam (Chris) Kaminski, and Terri O’Hern; grandchildren, Bobby Dale (Shelly), Johnny (Katie), Brian, Danielle (Justin) Kristy (James), Kyle, Kelly, Taeylor, Brett (Robyn) Heather, Josh (Mia), Madison, Kylie, Brett (Jacquelyn), Brittney (Mike), Bryan (Sunny); great grandchildren, Sydney, Kole, Rayce, Zakk, Logan, Braedan, Ashlynn, Greyden, Kella, Reagan, Grayson, Callie, Oliver, Parker, Nicolas, Phoenix, Malakai, and Millie; numerous nieces and nephews; and life long friend, Laura Slavik. She is predeceased by her parents, Luther and Roxy; grandson, Zachary; siblings, Margie (Sam) Grant, Odell Johnson, Shirley Scott, and Billy Johnson.

A public visitation will be on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, from 12:00 – 3:00 pm at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL 61108. Prayers will conclude at 2:45 pm. Please share memories and condolences online.
