Vana McVay Mitchell, age 89, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday September 8, 2024. Vana was born on October 9, 1934, in Corning, Arkansas the youngest child of Asie and Myrtle Porter. She lived there for 13 years before moving with her family to Rockford. Vana attended Rockford schools and received her GED at a later date.
Vana married Ed McVay on June 29, 1951. He preceded her in death in April 2005. She married William “Bill” Mitchell in 2006.
Vana worked for many years in the areas of manufacturing and clerical before retiring. She was a long-time member of the General Baptist faith. Vana loved everything related to Christmas, especially the music and home decorations! She enjoyed listening to gospel and country music, reading, and watching old westerns on TV. Family gatherings during the holidays and anytime were some of her happiest moments and created many fond memories! She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Survivors include sons David (Wanda) and Roger McVay of Tennessee; daughter Debra (Frank) Fuca of Rockford; grandchildren Aaron (Leslie), Danielle (Frenchie), Jake (Amy), Shanon (Tej), Erica (Keith), Josh (Annette), Adam and Holly. Numerous great-grandchildren; brother Olen Porter; many nieces, nephews and special friends (Linda and Wayne). Predeceased by husband Ed McVay; son Stephen McVay; parents and five sisters.
Her family would like to thank Northern Illinois Hospice, especially Nurse Stacy, for the wonderful care and love shown to Vana. You have proven that there are angels among us!
Cremation completed by Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, S. Mulford Chapel. Interment of cremated remains at Sunset Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens N. Alpine Road, where she will rest eternally with her husband, Ed.
