V. Paul Rafferty, 87, Rockford, died at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, November 29, 2009 in OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Born May 6, 1922 in Rockford, son of Andrew J. and Lora Palmatier Rafferty. Veteran of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Company for 33 years, retiring in 1978. Married Joan Ploger on June 5, 1948. They were residents of Libertyville for 33 years where Joan died January 6, 1988. He then returned to Rockford and on June 29, 1990 he married Joan Bartel. Member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Paul was a kind and loving man. He always had time for those around him and was a loyal friend to many. His main focus was always his family and he was truly devoted to them.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; his children, Michael P. (Donna) Rafferty, South Barrington, Kelly P. Rafferty, Lake Barrington and Kevin N. (Jennifer) Rafferty, Laguna Hills, CA; his daughter-in-law, Shirley Rafferty, Yorba Linda, CA., 8 grandchildren; his twin brother, Andrew P. (Peg) Rafferty, Parrish, FL and his sister-in-law, Peggy Spinello, Woodbridge, VA. Also survived by step-children, Susan (Jim) Belt, Pittsburgh, PA, Bill (Isobel) Bartel, Chesapeake, VA, Jane (Mark) Layng, Lilburn, GA, Deb (Lon) Jafraty, Loves Park, Mary (Charle) Clements, Noblesville, IN, Bob (Lynda) Bartel, Machesney Park, Tim Bartel, Pewaukee, WI, Joe (Kristan) Bartel, Sandwich, MA, Joan (Bill) Satterlee, Rockford and Frank (Judee) Bartel, Rockford; 25 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great grandchildren. Also predeceased by his parents; son James T. Rafferty; sisters Mary Wieland and Rita Strote and brother Jimmie Rafferty.
Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 2009 in Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Thomas E. Bales officiating. Burial in St. Mary/St. James Cemetery. Visitation from 4-7 p.m. Friday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. A Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Visitation also from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. on Saturday in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Poor Clares Corpus Christi Monastery.
