Thomas "Tom" R. Lester

Thomas Rory Lester, age 63, passed away unexpectedly on the morning of January 9, 2023 at home. He was born May 31, 1959 in Rockford to Thomas R. Lester and Kay Lester (Stanley). Tom is survived by his precious daughters, Marissa (Matt) Martinson and Paige Lester. Tom adored his daughters and was deeply proud of the fulfilling lives they’d built; and thrilled beyond words to have grandson, Duke Martinson. Tom was a dear brother to Ann (John Fryza)Walker, Kathy (Mark) Fransen, Sue (Frank) Tarara and Joe Hug; loving uncle to Michael Walker, Rachel Walker, Breanne (Zach) Borgetti, Thomas Fransen, Juliana Tarara and Gabrielle Tarara; and great uncle to Giada Borgetti; beloved nephew of Nancy (Bill) Havener, Jane Koryn, Lois (Vince Dina) Stanley and John Andreas; and fun cousin of Shauna Havener Shaw, John (Kim Dumke) Andreas, Amy (Curt Crosby) Andreas, Kate Dina and Jack Dina. He is also survived by his former wives Heidi Lester (Cox) and Mary Ann Varland. Special friend Lori Crask, her daughter Sara, and Lori’s three granddaughters, Addi, Baylee and Cena. Tom was preceded in death by his dear father in 1973, his stepfather’s Jack Hug and Dale Benson, his Aunt Mary Andreas, his Uncle Ted Koryn and by his beloved mother in 2019.

Tom was determinedly happy and positive. His quick wit and booming laugh made it fun to be with him. These qualities made Tom the perfect Santa Claus for many friends and family throughout the years.

Tom learned from his mother and Grandma Stanley to quickly turn out delicious meals. His love language was cooking for his family and friends. Tom was a man of faith. He was active in his church life: from teaching Sunday school, many mission trips, and ushering at his favorite spot, “Door One”. The warmth of his smile and great humor will be remembered.

Visitation will be on Thursday, January 12th from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford IL 61108. A Celebration of Tom’s life will be held Friday, January 13th at 2:30pm at City First Church, 5950 Spring Creek Rd, Rockford, IL 61114. Tom will be laid to rest at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Carpenter’s Place.
