Thomas P. Shinn Thomas P. "Tom" Shinn, 82, a resident of Rockford for 75 years, passed away on June 22, 2009 in his home surrounded by his family. Tom was born September 19, 1926 in Evanston, IL the son of John C. Shinn and Mary M. (Morrissey). Tom enlisted with the US Navy at the age of seventeen, graduated from Rockford West High School in 1947 and married Jacqueline M. "Jake" Carlson on May 31, 1947 in Rockford. He played semi-pro football in Rockford in the late 1940s, worked for Illinois Bell for 30 years as a PBX Repairman and for CDC Corp. for 12 years. Tom was the Chief Union Steward for IBEW Local No.399 for 15 years, an officer in the Roscoe Sportsmans Club serving in many capacities for 25+ years, and a great supporter of Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, drawing, painting and wood carving. Tom is survived by his wife, Jacqueline M. "Jake" ; children, Mike (Jan) Shinn, Barb Calgaro, Georgia (Scott) Still, Margaret (Dale) Clark and Steve Shinn; grandchildren, Ann, Monica, Renee, Abbie, Emilie, Daniel, Andy, Dayna, Melanie, and Adam; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Shawn, Mackenzie, Caitlin, and Lauren; brother, William (Shirley) Shinn; and sister-in-law, Betty Shinn. Tom was predeceased by his parents; brothers, John C. Shinn, II and Charles Shinn, and son-in-law, Tom Calgaro. A memorial gathering will be held for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, 2009 in his home. Burial will be private. Arrangements were handled through Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel.
