Thomas P. Murphy

Thomas P. Murphy, 75, Rockford, went home to the Lord peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024, in Byron, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 23, 1948, the son of Sterling and Rosemary (Hart) Murphy. He was married to Margaret (Armato) Murphy on January 4, 1969, at St. Anthony Catholic Church. They were married for 51 years until she passed away in August of 2020. 

Before retirement, Tom worked as a mechanic and field engineer for Nicor. He was a proud member of the U.S. Navy and a Vietnam veteran. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren, exercise, watch movies and his favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame. 

He is survived by his sons, Patrick (Christina) Murphy, and Chris (Laura) Murphy; his grandchildren, Eryn (Jacob) McCabe, Brenna, Alex, Christopher, and Ava Murphy; his sister, Sheryl Moberg; and his brother, Jim Murphy. He is preceded by his wife, Margaret.

A visitation will take place on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, IL 61108. 

A second visitation will take place on Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1010 Ferguson St., Rockford, IL, 61102. Burial is to follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery where military honors will take place. The family was assisted by Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory.
