Stephen "Steve" P. Symes

Stephen “Steve” Paul Symes, 84, Belvidere, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2022 in his yard from a sudden cardiac event. He was born September 3, 1937, in Owatonna, Minnesota, the son of Paul and Ruth (Lerberg) Symes. Steve grew up in Northfield, Minnesota and graduated from St. Olaf College with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. He married Suzette “Sue” Fivaz in Park Ridge on May 11, 1968. Steve started his career at the Bureau of Labor Statistics before joining Sundstrand Corporation where he worked in the Human Resources, Compensation, and Benefits area for 34 years until retiring in July 2000. Both Steve and Sue were active members of St. Mark Lutheran Church. Steve loved being outside and volunteered with the Men’s Garden Club of Rockford and Klehm Arboretum. He also could be found in the yard tending to a garden, clearing invasive plants, or restoring native prairies. Steve will be remembered by many with a big smile on his face and a friendly wave. He put a high priority on his family and lovingly cared for Sue during her journey with Alzheimer’s.

Steve was preceded in death by his wife Sue. Steve is survived by his son, Scott (Irene) Symes of Port Washington, WI and his daughter, Sandra (Mike) Genovese of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren, Marie Fiacchino, Ethan Symes, Adele and Ruby Genovese; his sister Sonja and brothers Robert and Phillip. Predeceased by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 22, 2022 at Noon, with visitation from 10:30 to 11:45 A.M. at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 675 N. Mulford Rd. Rockford. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church or Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden, 2715 S.
