Sophie Smolen

Sophie M. (Toporek) Smolen, 93, of Rockford left this world on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016. She was the dear wife and best friend of the late Eugene A. Smolen for 65 years and beloved mother of Gerald (Madeline) of Stratford, CT., Thomas S. (late Colette) of Rockford, IL. Grandmother of Troy, Jason (Sheri), Nicholas (Jennifer), Benjamin (Dr. Melanie) and great grandmother to Ashley, Sierra, Easton, Beckett and Briley; sister of MaryAnn (George) Ryan and Walter (late Margaret) Toporek and was a loving aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Anna Toporek, siblings, Stanley (Mary) Sr., M. Lydia CSFN, John (Mary), Josephine (Anthony) Dunat, Frank (Helen) and Genevieve; sisters-in-law, Lorraine (Robert) Mathis, Sylvia (Hilary) Janikowski and brother-in-law, Cornelius (Betty) Smolen. Sophie was a faithful member of St. Edward Catholic Church, Rockford, IL, the Christian Guild in Cudahy, Wi, F.O.C.L. and the Kelly Senior Singers of Cudahy, WI.
Funeral Mass Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Edward Catholic Church, Rockford. Visitation Monday, Feb. 29, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel 1860 S. Mulford Rd. and continues at church on Tuesday in the parish hall from 9 a.m. until time of prayer at 9:45 a.m. Entombment to be held at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Cudahy, WI immediately following Mass in Rockford.
