Sister James Marie OConnor, 91 of Rockford died Wednesday, February 29, 2012 at home. Born February 21, 1921 in Gary, Indiana daughter of Luke and Bridgett (Carroll) OConnor. Received her Masters Degree from Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI.
As a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 68 years Sister James Marie served as teacher, principal and superior in Wisconsin and Illinois. She also served as a Community Supervisor and as a member of the Constitutional Preparatory Commission at the SSND Generalate in Rome. Sister James Marie served as Provincial Leader of the Chicago DeKalb Province (currently), the AtlanticMidwest Province).
Sister served in the Diocese of Rockford from 1969 to current.nbsp; She served as Episcopal Delegate for Women Religious from 1975 2009; Planning Committee for the Diocesan Jubilee 2000; Parish Consultation Process and Catholic Charities Board.nbsp; She currently served on the Diocesan Review Board; Spiritual Director/Advisor for the Ladies Auxiliary of Catholic Charities, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include; sister, Theresa OConnor. Predeceased by her parents and brother, Rev. James OConnor.
Funeral Mass 11 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2012 at the Cathedral of St. Peter 1243 N. Church St. Rockford, Il 61103 with Most Reverend Bishop Thomas G. Doran, D.D., J.C.D., officiating. Visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2012 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home (Riverside Chapel) 3910 N. Rockton Ave. with a Rosary service at 4 p.m. Visitation also Monday, from 10 to 10:45 am at the Cathedral of St. Peter. nbsp;Burial in Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery, Worth, Illinois.
nbsp;In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the retirement fund of the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
