Shirley Lightcap

Shirley Lightcap, 87, of Rockford passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Swedish American Hospital. Born August 1, 1927, in Rockford, the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Johnson) West. She graduated from Rockford East High School and attended Rockford College and the University of Wisconsin. Shirley married Royal M. Lightcap on September 3, 1948; he predeceased her on May 27, 1999. Shirley worked alongside her husband Royal, as vice-president of Rockford Standard Furniture. She played a significant role in building Rockford Standard Furniture into one of the 10th largest single-store furniture retailers in the country. Shirley's keen eye for detail found a creative outlet in choosing decorative pieces that enhanced the interior design element of the business. She was active at the Rockford Women's Club, the New American Theater and the Rockford Red Cross. Shirley was also a former member of Bethesda Covenant Church and Forest Hills Country Club.
Survived by her children, Jeff (Jane) Lightcap, of Rockford, Martha (Tom Lane) Lightcap, of Berkeley, CA and Matt (Kate Garrison) of Rockford; grandchildren, Seth (Allison) Lightcap, Jesse Lightcap and Tyler Lightcap, all of Truckee, CA. Also predeceased by her parents and sister, Marcella Kaberg.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 South Mulford Road. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. A private interment service will take place immediately after the funeral service.
