Sally Voss Trefz

Sally Voss Trefz, 94, of Rockford, passed away on May 17, 2023. Born on September 24, 1928, to Dr. Charles H. and Sara P. Voss, Sally was one of five children. A lifelong Rockford resident, Sally enjoyed a happy and active childhood in a neighborhood filled with children. She attended Highland Grade School, Lincoln and East High School, class of 1946, where she was active in debate and swimming activities. She and her twin sister, Shirley, were honored with the ABL award given to the outstanding senior girl. Sally continued her education at Rockford College transferring to the University of Iowa as a junior and receiving her degree in Physical Education in 1950. Sally joined the Rockford School System and began her teaching career at Kishwaukee Grade School and West High School and spent her summers teaching swimming to children at the college for many years. Sally married her husband of 68 years, Clair, on December 22, 1950, and together they raised three sons. As the boys grew older, Sally returned to her teaching career at Wilson Middle School where she taught family living until her retirement in 1993, and during that year, was honored as Teach of the Year.

Throughout her life, Sally was an active volunteer serving many causes including the Schools, Unitarian Universalist Church, child welfare, and Rockford College where she was given the Talcott Cross as the outstanding alumna for her service to the college.

Sally and Clair were both “people” oriented. They were always there to lend a helping hand to friends and family alike. During their many years together, they traveled both here and abroad enjoying activities with family and friends. She will be solely missed by many.

Sally is survived by her sons, Charles (Debbie), Alan, and William (Diane); six grandchildren, Ellie, Benjamin, Joan, Tyler, Dan, and Lauren; four great grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Voss Baits; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Clair in 2018; siblings, Evelyn Voss Palm, Dr. James Voss, and Shirley Voss Henley Phillon.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner Street, Rockford 61107, or Rockford University, 5050 East State Street Rockford 61108.
