Ruth M. Hoxie, 90, of Rockford passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Oakwood Village in Madison, Wisconsin. Born April 27, 1923 in Santa Maria, California; the daughter of Alonzo E. and Josefa L. (Carranza) Westmoreland. She graduated from high school in Santa Maria and went on to earn a BA in Education from San Jose State College. Ruth married Rockford native, James E. Hoxie on October 16, 1943 in St. Mary's Church in Santa Maria. They made their home in Rockford. Jim died on October 24, 1988. Ruth was a second grade teacher at Westview School for 28 years, retiring in 1986. She was a charter member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church. Ruth loved to quilt, knit and play bridge. Her grandchildren fondly remember her peanut butter cookies.
Survived by her children, Mary (John McEwan) Cook of Madison, Neil (Renee) Hoxie of Madison, Julie Kaspar of Eugene, OR and Ann (William) Pasco of Mesa, AZ; grandchildren, Timothy Cook, Matthew (Meredith Root) Cook, Andrew (Christina) Holm, Sara Hoxie and Emily (Kenneth Scidmore) Hoxie; and great-granddaughter, Mabel Boylen. Ruth was predeceased by her parents and a daughter, Susan Hoxie.
Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Avenue. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m., with a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Riverside Chapel, 3910 North Rockton Avenue.
