Rosa Solano, 89, of Rockford, Illinois, went to be with the Lord on Saturday January 18, 2020, after a long illness. She passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her family. Rosa was born September 21, 1930, in Aragona, Sicily, Italy, the daughter of Dionisio and Rosaria Piranio. She immigrated to the United States in 1962, and settled in Rockford. Rosa soon met the love of her life, Gaspare “Jasper” Solano, and the two were married on December 18, 1965, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. She worked for Nelson Knitting Company for over 20 years. She was a devoted wife, loving sister, and adored aunt and great aunt. She was a wonderful cook and will always be remembered for her delicious ‘Zia Rosa’s Cookies’. She will be missed by many.
Survivors include her sisters; Gerlanda Piranio and Giuseppa Galluzzo; her sisters-in-law, Francesca Misurca, Michela Giglione, and Maria (Enzo) Vinci; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gaspare Solano; her brother, Michele Piranio; her brothers-in-law Salvatore Galluzzo, Mario Giglione, Giovanni Misurca, and Francesco Giacone; sisters-in-law, Colomba De Agostinis and Lilla Giacone; and nieces, Rosaria Andraka, and Calogera Dicken.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, January 25, 2020, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1010 Ferguson St., Rockford with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Entombment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation from 9:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at the church on Saturday. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S.
