Robert “Bob” Jacob Bogdonas, 87, of Rockford died Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in Arizona. Born July 1, 1929 in Rockford, he was the son of John and Mary (Belskis) Bogdonas. A standout athlete, Bob graduated from East High School, where he was named First Team All-Conference for football and baseball. Accepting a scholarship to Iowa Wesleyan University, he received a BA in education in 1953. While there, he earned All-American honors and was later inducted into his school’s hall of fame for football and baseball.
On July 28, 1951, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Loretta Calacurcio. They led a happy and lively house with seven children. He worked as a supervisor for Arco (originally Sinclair), retiring after 30 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and coaching baseball, encouraging his teams to “sacrifice your body.” In his retirement, Bob spent years as the President of the Lithuanian Club here in Rockford where he could be seen with his dance shoes on, tapping his toes to the polka.
