Richard R. Swanson

Richard R. Swanson, 90, of Rockford, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018.

Son of Harry and Myrtle (Larson) Swanson, Richard was born on a farm in Cambridge, MN on April 1, 1927. He moved with his family to Rockford, IL when he was 15 years old. Richard married Florence A. Stelma on June 26, 1948 in Rockford. He served in the Navy for one year after WWII and again in the Korean Conflict, where he was stationed at Portsmouth, VA, and where his daughter, Wendy Ann was born. Richard was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of Local 150 Operating Engineers, retiring from Rockford Blacktop. He will be greatly missed by all.

Survived by his daughter, Wendy (Dick) Barton of Rockford; sister, Gloria Swanson; 5 nephews; and a sister-in-law.

Predeceased by his wife of 63 and a half years; his parents; an infant daughter, Gail; 2 brothers, Vernal and Rodney; a niece and nephew; and brother-in-law, Roger Stelma.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with the Reverend Brent Dahlseng officiating. Visitation from 1:00 pm until time of service on Wednesday. Burial will take place at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Swanson family.
