ROCKFORD, IL - Richard Buxton Scott, 91, died at 12:20 a.m. on January 11, 2016 at Presence St. Anne Center in Rockford, IL, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 14, 1924, to John L. and Martha (Buxton) Scott. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1943 and Iowa State College in 1947. In 1954 he earned a Master’s Degree in counseling from Northwestern University.
Mr. Scott began his career as an educator in Kirkwood, IL, where he was a teacher and coach at the high school from 1947 to 1949. From 1949 to 1955, he taught and coached at the Antioch, IL high school. In 1955 the family moved to Sycamore, IL, where he was a teacher and guidance counselor until 1962. The Scotts moved to Rockford in 1962, where Mr. Scott served as a guidance counselor and coach at Guilford High School until his retirement in 1983.
In 1947 Mr. Scott married Marjorie Lyon, daughter of Sam and Pearl Lyon of Boone, Iowa. She predeceased him in 2000. In 2003, he married Carol Hamilton of Rockford, who survives him.
Mr. Scott is also survived by his four children, Richard (Dee) Scott, Muskegon, MI; Robert (Kay) Scott, Grand Rapids, MI; Charles (Polly) Scott, West Chester, PA; Susan Scott Wilkening, Harvard, IL; three stepchildren, Victoria (Scott) Brean, Rockford; Thomas Hamilton, Bandon, OR; Christine (Jeffrey) LaMantia, Rockford; brother, David W. (Virginia) Scott, Springfield, IL. Sister-in-law Joan Scott, (Herbert Scott, deceased), Barrington Shores, IL; grandchildren James (Kristin) Scott, Randee (Craig) Bowder, Troy (Meribeth) Wolffis, Todd (Debbie) Wolffis, Carrie (Brent) Southland, Jeff (Nicole) Scott, Darcy Scott, Katy Scott, Avery (Patty) Wilkening, Zachary Wilkening, and Nathan (Kyla) Wilkening; Joseph LaMantia, Alison LaMantia and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Scott had many interests throughout his life. As a high school and college student, he was a varsity baseball player. He loved music, especially classical music, and played the viola in his high school orchestra. He was skilled at the art of creating miniature room settings and belonged to the Rockford Miniature Club for many years. He was active in community service; he directed the Day Camp program at Aldeen Park for six years, served as a counselor for Contact Rockford for thirty five years beginning in 1971; and was a volunteer counselor at the County Jail for five years. He was a leader at the Court Street United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, where he taught Sunday school and chaired several committees. He loved playing golf and bridge, collecting coins, and he followed the Chicago Cubs throughout his life.
Richard Scott will be lovingly remembered not only by his family but by the countless people whose lives he touched. His warmth, kindness, loyalty, humor, and wisdom were a blessing to all. His faith was deep, and he lived his faith fully.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Court Street United Methodist Church, Winnebago County Jail Ministry, or The Wounded Warrior Project.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Court Street United Methodist Church, Rockford, with Reverend Calvin Culpepper officiating. Inurnment will be private.
