Raymond R. Gonzales, affectionately known as “Gonzo,” passed away peacefully on October 4, 2024, surrounded by the loving embrace of family. Born on August 3, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Ester Cuellar. Raymond's journey took him through the halls of education at Rock Valley College, where he earned his associate's degree. He married Vickie Clarke on November 8, 2003. Dedication and service were paramount throughout his life, honoring his commitment to his country in the U.S Army for 24 years, 8 months, and 16 days, before transitioning to a devoted career as a police officer for 27 years at the City of Rockford Police Department.
Raymond was more than just a dedicated professional; he was a vibrant soul, known for his spitfire personality, humor, and an unwavering kindness that touched the lives of everyone he encountered. Friends and family will remember him not only for his warm heart but also for his passion in life. An enthusiastic lover of the outdoors, he spent countless cherished moments camping, fishing, biking, and hiking, always encouraging his grandchildren to experience the beauty of nature along with him. His grandchildren were the light of his life—Raymond took immense pleasure in teaching them how to play guitar and learn archery, skills he cherished and hoped to pass on to the next generation. He enjoyed attending their sporting events, cheering them on from the sidelines with pride and enthusiasm. Those memories hold a special place in the hearts of his family, where the love he imparted will endlessly resonate.A loyal fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago White Sox, Raymond's spirit shone through in every aspect of his life. Whether it was grilling out in the backyard or sharing a laugh with friends, he knew how to bring joy and camaraderie to every gathering. His humor and caring demeanor made him a beloved figure in the community. Gonzo shared a close relationship with one of his lifelong friends Father William Wentink.
He is survived by those who loved him most, wife, Vickie; children, Carol (Dan) Ivanov, Chad "Chico" Gonzales, Abbie (Jason) Rotello; and Gretchen (Steven) Williams; grandchildren, Camdyn, Chloe, Easton, Brynn, Luca, Michaela, Rylan, Connor, Madison, Tara, Tyler, and Trace; sister, Maria Rose Checkley; foster brother, Richard Tucker; and many friends, nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and fellow service members.He is predeceased by his mom, Ester, and numerous siblings.The family would like to give a special thank you to Amy of OSF Palliative Care and all the amazing staff at UW Health Cancer Center and UW Health Swedish American Hospital.
As we pause to remember a life well-lived, we invite all who knew Raymond to gather for a graveside service on October 9, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery, 6202 Charles Street in Rockford, Illinois. While we mourn the tremendous loss of a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend, we also celebrate the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind—a testament to a life filled with love, laughter, and unwavering support for his family and friends.Raymond R.
