Ralph C. “Chico” Gates 73 of Rockford passed away January 8, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was born January 17, 1942 in Rockford the son of Donald and Audrey Gates. He graduated from St. Thomas High School class of 1960 and Loras College. He married Trudy Sandona on May 16, 1970. Chico was a well-respected State Farm agent for many years. He served in the Vietnam War and was a 19-year heart transplant recipient. Chico was a beautiful soul loved by many. He had a witty sense of humor, a love and dedication to his family, a heartwarming and contagious smile, a passion for life with his positive, honest and strong willed character. He had a love for golf, gardening, dancing and his family. He was a Pa Pa to his grandchildren whom he cherished. He now may rest in peace, but his spirit shines brighter than ever.
Survivors include his wife Trudy. Children, Jennifer (Tim) Kelly, Michael (Ami) Gates, Peter (Amy) Gates and Joey (Nicole) Gates. Grandchildren, Alec, Gavin, Andrew, Gianna, Gabriella, Michael, Carmella and Sophia. Siblings, Rita (Lyle) Morse, Mary Ann (Tom) Nimmo, Colette (Norm) Buchert, Tom (Rita) Gates and Monica (Allan) Matthes. In-laws, Reno (Rosemary) Sandona, Debra (Roy) Chostner and Michael (Pam) Sandona. Plus many nieces, nephews and special friends. Predeceased by his parents, stepmother Katie Gates, brother Joseph Gates, Mother and Father In-law Gene and Reno Sandona.
