N.Gunnar Fransen (Gunny), 86 Rockford - Passed away Monday, May 31, 2010. Born February 10, 1924 in Rockford to Olga & Nils Fransen. Graduate of East High School, Class of 1942. Served his country during WWII as an Army Air Corp C-47 pilot until 1945 flying missions in North Africa, Europe and South America. Attended Luther College, Wahoo, Nebraska. Received a bachelors degree from NIU and a masters degree from Northern Colorado University. Married to Doris B. Johnson on October 15, 1947 in Chappell, NE. Retired as Director of Adult & Vocational Education for Rockford School District after 30 years of service. After his retirement he was co-owner of the Wood Merchant gift shop. He was a member of the Rockford Noon Lions Club & Alpine Lutheran Church. Gunnar enjoyed woodworking, golf, squadron reunions and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris Fransen, son Steve (Jean) Fransen; daughter Joni (David) Omlor; grandchildren, Patti (Jason) Meyer; Joe Fransen (Bill Roberts David Fransen; Steven Omlor. Great grandchildren; Emma & Tyler Meyer. Predeceased by brother Norman Fransen. Funeral service Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Alpine Lutheran Church, 5001 Forest View Ave. with Rev. Dr. Richard Meier officiating. Visitation from 10-10:45 a.m. in the church. Cremation rites to follow the service. Memorials to Alpine Lutheran Church or Rockford Noon Lions Club.
