Michael Battista, 95, of Rockford, passed away on December 11, 2024, at home surrounded by his family. He was born on July 15, 1929, in Triggiano, Italy, to Joseph and Maria (Pompilio) Battista. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the U.S.S. Melvin during the Korean War. On August 22, 1955, he married Pasqua Grisanzio in Italy, and together they shared 69 wonderful years. Michael attended Coyne College in Chicago and subsequently worked as a Research and Development Engineer at Sunbeam Corporation in Chicago before opening Lino’s Restaurant in 1972 with his wife, Pasqua, and sons, Joe and Jim. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Rockford and St. William Catholic Church in Naples, Florida. Michael enjoyed golfing, photography, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. An innovative and inquisitive mind, Michael used his mechanical and electrical proficiencies at the restaurant to repair and improve equipment, as well as to invent machinery that enabled the preparation of higher-quality food on an industrial scale. His passion for knowledge and enthusiasm for new technology were contagious, and he delighted in sharing them with others.
Michael is survived by those who loved him most: his wife, Pasqua; sons, Joseph (Brenda) Battista and Jim (Andie) Battista; grandchildren, Michael (Dr. Patricia Corona) Battista, Celeste (Charlie Schweinler) Battista, Noel Battista, Olivia Battista, and Annabella Battista; great-grandchildren, Joseph, Eden, and one on the way; sister, Antoinette (Don) Wagner; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to extend a special thank you to caregivers Oleksandra Koshyk and Ilona Holod, Becky Pierce with Sanctuary Hospice, and Dr. Steven DiSanti for their exceptional care of Michael.
