Maureen A. Monahan Hughes, 66, Rockford, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010 in Swedish American Hospital surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born December 9, 1943 in Oak Park, IL, daughter of Robert J.and Rita B. Rochford Monahan. Graduated from Notre Dame High School in Chicago. Married the love of her life, Terrence P. Hughes, on November 23, 1963. They had been sweethearts since the 8 th grade. Member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She had been employed by Amcore Bank in the Trust Department for 20 years, retiring in 2009. Active member of the Rockford community, having previously been a member of the Rockford Woman's Club and Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club. Her volunteer activities included the Coronado Theatre, Northern Illinois Hospice & Grief Center and OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. Maureen was a dignified, classy woman who loved to have a good time. Always proud of her Irish heritage, she was honest, well intentioned and a proud and protective mother and grandmother. She was truly loved by everyone who knew her. Survivors include her son, Jim (Carol) Hughes, Rockford; daughter, Jodi (John) Darrow, Clarendon Hills; grandchildren, Kayla, Kara and Kelsey Hughes and Jack, Jimmy and Caroline Darrow; sister, Maryellen Monahan, Elmhurst and many loving, special nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by her husband on November 18, 1986, her parents and her sister, Rita Bruno. The family would like to thank Maureen's many women friends who enjoyed her company so much and also John and Fran Morrissey who were always there for her and her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 7, 2010 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also from 9-9:45 a.m. on Thursday in the church. Memorials may be made to Northern Illinois Hospice Association or the Owen C. Phelps, Sr., Joan K. Phelps and Mary Phelps Rose Memorial to Assist Boylan High School Families Dealing With An Illness or Tragedy. Express condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
