Mary Dawson Maggio passed away at her home on Friday, August 5, 2022, after bravely battling a long illness. Mary was born to Emma “Bea” Carlson on January 11, 1940, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated with honors from Bishop Muldoon High School in 1957 and was a certified social worker for the Department of Public Aid.
Mary wed Sam Frank Maggio in October 1982 and was a loving wife until his passing in January 2016. She worked with Sam to run the Shopping Bag Supermarkets, and Deli Basket Restaurant and Catering. Mary was a wonderful mother to Sam’s two sons, Frank Samuel Maggio and Patrick Michael Maggio. Mary was also a devoted daughter to her mother, Sam’s mother, Lucy (Musso) Maggio, and her dear friend Beth Lewis, caring for each one until their passings.
In addition to Frank and Patrick and their respective spouses, Jay and Amy, Mary is survived by four grandchildren, Nickolas Maggio, Joey Domanski, Mitchell Donanski, and Michael Maggio (Charysma), and their son, Bowyn. Mary is also survived by her beloved sister-in-law, Maureen Dawson, wife of Raymond Dawson, who preceded Mary in death, and their daughters, Debbie (Chris) Jones and Judy (A.J.) Taylor, along with many great nieces and nephews.
Mary especially loved her family and friends, and treated them to delicious home cooking, she enjoyed card games and was an avid bridge player. Mary was an active member of the Rockford Women’s club and a devout Catholic. She was a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church and active in the Women’s League.
A visitation will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Rd. Rockford, IL 61107. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Private Burial at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
A loving mother, aunt, grandmother and friend, Mary will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
