Mary M. Stevens

Mary Edith (Moyer) Stevens (86) passed away peacefully on Monday, August 13, 2012, after a long battle with Corticobasal Degeneration. Born June 13, 1926 in Corning, NY to Dorothy (Sternberg) Moyer and Jason K. Moyer, grew up in Binghamton, NY and attended Bucknell University (Lewisburg, PA), graduated in 1948 and finished her masters degree at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY). She married Robert Stevens on July 10, 1954. After their marriage in NY, they returned to Rockford, adopting their son, Bruce (9 mos.) and daughter, Lisa (5 mos.). In 1963, Mary and Bob entered into a big adventure, purchasing a small motel in Shelbyville, KY and lived there until 1970 when they returned to Rockford. Mary taught the adult education/GED program until she retired in 1984. She served on a local "Peace with Justice" committee, uniting 450 local school children with children in Russia, helping them become pen pals and lifelong friends. Mary was an accomplished artist, she played the flute and piano and sang in the church choir. She and Bob are members of Westminster Presbyterian church in Rockford. Mary will always be remembered for the smile in her heart and the smile on her face. Mary is predeceased by her mother, Dorothy Moyer, father, Jason K. Moyer, brother, Dr. Jason K. Moyer and her son, Bruce Stevens. She is survived by her husband, Robert Stevens, her daughter, Lisa (Gail) Stevens, granddaughters, Rhiannon (Ryan) Caufield, Francine Stevens, Melanie Stevens and 4 greatgrandchildren, Haileah, Brittany, Reese and Rylen.Visitation: 10:00 11:00 a.m., Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. on September 8, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2821 N.
