Mary A. Handlogten

August 31, 1935 — March 20, 2025

Rockford

Mary Ann Handlogten, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Although she will be dearly missed, her family is rejoicing that she has been welcomed home into the loving arms of Jesus.

Mary was born in Marshalltown, Iowa on August 31, 1935, the daughter of Henry John and Fannie (deNeui) Kannegieter. She attended Shiloh #3 and Timothy Christian Schools and graduated from Wellsburg High School in Iowa. Mary then went on to earn her teaching degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She married Howard “Howie” R Handlogten in Wellsburg, IA on September 5, 1956. Howie was the love of her life, and they spent the next 68 years happily married and holding each other's hand. Mary was strong in her faith and was grateful for her strong Christian Reformed roots. She taught Sunday school, bible school, was involved in coffee fellowships and proudly sang in the church choir. Mary was also a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rockford, IL. She volunteered her time with Concordia Lutheran School, loved gardening, baking, boating on the Rock River and coffee time with her neighbors. Mary and Howie also loved to travel, especially their mystery bus trips and cruises together. They traveled to China, Europe, the Caribbean and Iceland, but were equally happy going back to her hometown roots in Wellsburg, IA. Most of all, Mary’s greatest joy was raising her 4 children and spending time with her loved ones, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving relatives include her husband, Howard “Howie” Handlogten; children, Marie (Doug) DeYoung, Glen (Laurie) Handlogten, Laura (Steve) Faherty and John Handlogten; grandchildren, Jonathan (Andrea) DeYoung, Kristen (Joshua) Konkel, Michael Handlogten, Jason (Katie) Handlogten, Amy Handlogten, Brittini (Sam) Elliott and Kylee (Matt) Dripps; great-grandchildren, Oliver, Theo, Althea, Jackson, Owen, Ellie, Anderson and Penny Lane; sister, Martha Lou (Marv) DeVries and brother-in-law, Howard Huisman, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mary is predeceased by her parents; sister, Verda (Hank) Vanderzyden and sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Huisman.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary's name to the local Meals On Wheels or Westminster Presbyterian Church.

A private family memorial service will be held at Wesley Willows in Rockford, IL and the final resting place will be in Westminster Presbyterian Church columbarium memorial garden. Share online memories and condolences at www.fitzgeraldfh.com
