Mary H. Megginson died April 17, 2016, Rockford, Illinois after a long illness. Mary was born March 15, 1924, in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents were William and Maude Hill. In 1942, she married Raymond George Young and together, they had a daughter, Carolyn. Raymond and Mary divorced in 1964 and he preceded her in death in 1969.
In Mary’s youth, she was offered a college art scholarship, but declined due to family obligations. She sketched portraits beautifully over the years, until her eyesight failed. She was an avid reader for her entire life and in later years, enjoyed audio books when she could no longer read. Mary attended business school in Springfield IL and worked in and managed several businesses in the 1960’s.
In 1969, Mary married Ralph Megginson. They were happily married for 32 years. They enjoyed their life together on the Megginson farm in Pawnee, Illinois. Mary loved cooking, baking, entertaining, bowling, pinochle, and had a creative eye for fashion. She was also fond of spending time with Ralph’s family. Mary had many friends in Pawnee, Springfield and Rockford, and loved socializing with all. She moved to Rockford IL in 2001 to be near her family. She resided at Peterson Meadows, Bickford House of Rockford and at Cor Mariae in Rockford.
She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Repka (Rodney); grandchildren, Scott Strum, Amy Gille, (Brian), Erin Szykowny (Martin); great-grandchildren, Joshua and Noah Gille, Tiffany Kroschel (Kyle), Rebecca Faery; great-great grandchildren, Kory and Kody Kroschel; step-children, Carole Christner, Norman (Vicki) Megginson and Michael (Sandra) Megginson, niece, Virginia Kresco and nephew, Joseph Lee Calandro. Mary was predeceased by her husband Ralph, parents, her brother, Edgar Hill, sister, Lillian Hill Calandro and step son-in-law, Russell Christner. Mary was loved and will be missed by many.
Visitation Thursday, April 21 from 4-7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Illinois 61108. Private service to be held on Friday. Graveside service Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. at Horse Creek Cemetery, Pawnee, IL. Mary will be buried next to her husband, Ralph, in Horse Creek Cemetery, Pawnee, Illinois.
