Martin Edward Schmeling, 68, of Rockford, a gentle and kind man, died on Saturday, December 16, 2017 following a lengthy illness. Born February 19, 1949 to Robert and Elsa (Buetsch) Schmeling in Rockford and lived his whole life in the area. Marty graduated from West High School and Valparaiso University, IN. He dedicated his entire career to Schmeling Building Supply, a third-generation Rockford family business. He began as a yardman, gradually moving up to become an estimator, buyer, and office manager. Marty married Judith Schmitt on September 29, 1979. He loved his family deeply, worked tirelessly at the office, and enjoyed many hands-on hobbies. He was particularly gifted as a listener, whether in the role of customer service or as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, or friend.
He is survived by his wife, Judi; his daughters, Ginger (Mike) Flanagan, Becky (Ehren) Manning, and Mollie (Dan) Riportella; nine grandchildren; sisters, Jean Lambert and Roberta (Jerry) Reblin, both of MI; brother and business partner, John (Lin) Schmeling of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, and brother, Robert “Butchie” Jr.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Peter. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel. Burial will be at Willwood Cemetery.
