Marilyn “Sally” J. Schrom, 98 a lifelong resident of Rockford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Sunday December 31, 2023, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. She was born on October 4, 1925, to Samuel and Vera Key. Sally was a 1943 graduate of East High School. She enjoyed her long tenure at Illinois Bell as an operator, wire chief and administrative assistant. During her career with Illinois Bell she worked at Camp Grant making sure all soldiers were able to call home and connect with loved ones. Her true enjoyment was being with family and friends. An avid bridge player, she played twice a week and subbed as often as she could. Sally was a lifelong member of St. James Catholic Church, Pioneers of America, “Club 43 (East High classmates), Catholic Women’s League and was a loyal Boylan Booster.
Survivors include her son, Arthur (Charlene) Schrom, Amherst NH, her daughter, Connie (Andrew) Riggs, Rockford; her grandchildren, Joseph (Christine) Schrom, Naperville, Il, Steven Schrom, Boston, Michael & Annelyne Riggs, Plano TX, Patrick & Allison Riggs, Villa Park, IL : her great-granddaughters Jordan, Mackenzie and Molly Schrom, Naperville, Il. Gabrielle Riggs, Plano TX; her step-grandchildren; Rachel Trombly Meyer, Foxborough MA, Elizabeth (Stephen) Leighton, Hopkinton, MA: her step-great grandchildren; Hannah ,Hailey , & Seth Trombly, Foxborough, MA and Paige, Cathryn and Stephen Leighton, Hopkinton, MA; her niece Priscilla Geraci, her nephew Steven Key and many dear cousins.
Predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Wayne A. Schrom, her parents; her sister, Lois Key Gustafson; her brother, Kenneth Key; her daughter-in-law, Joanne Schrom; her nieces, Pamila Gioppo and Lori Gustafson and her nephew, Kevin Key.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at St. James Catholic Church, 428 N. 2nd St. Rockford, Il with Rev. David Beauvais officiating. Interment in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to: St. James Church Restoration Fund.
