Marie G. Plumb

March 22, 1915 — August 24, 2019

On August 24 Burnt Store Marina lost probably its oldest resident at 104 years 5 months. It was Marie Plumb, Sharon Monge’s Mom as well as an honorary Mom to many of us around here.
Born 3-22-15 and died very peacefully on 8-24-19 at Bill & Sharon’s house. She married John E. Plumb on 6-6-36 at the “Little Brown Church” in Nashua, IA. They were married for 61 years. Sharon was her only child and in 2002, got her to bail out of Rockford, IL, where she had lived all of her life, and move down here into Marlin Run. She never wanted to go back after getting used to Florida.
Marie was more than determined at everything. As a kid she never lost at “Ball & Jacks”. Kids used to play Marbles and she always cleaned out the boys who would have to return home with an empty sack. She played the Mandolin and graduated from Banjo School after 3 years. She played Banjo on the Rockford radio station and sang Soprano in the church choir. She loved her Grand Daughters, Sonja & Carol who were with her near the end, and her two Great Grand Children, Clint and Rachel.
One of her fondest memories in life was golf. Marie got hooked about age 40. She could not afford a golf lesson so she bought a book by Sam Snead and taught herself, and did a damn fine job. She was always winning something. In 1958 and 59 she was ladies city champion in Rockford, IL. She always played on public courses and REALLY enjoyed whipping the Country Clubbers, who looked down their noses at her. By the way, Bill Monge never beat her. Always hard to beat straight down the middle with 1 or 2 putts.
She loved meeting everyone here at our parties and was not bashful when it came to talking to anyone.
Now, she is in Heaven where she can finally meet her Mother whom she never knew because she died the day Marie was born. And, of course, she can also play golf again with her husband, John.
Hit ‘em straight, Marie.
