Margery Ann Evanson Smith (87), a long-time resident of Rockford, Illinois passed away on March 6, 2023. Margery was born August 11, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois to Howard H. and Evelyn (Lindquist) Evanson. She lived in neighborhoods around Chicago until attending Beloit College and Rockford College. At Beloit College she earned a degree in math with minors in French and Spanish and was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta fraternity. In later years, she would laughingly recall a French instructor who said she spoke French like she had castanets on her fingers and a rose in her mouth. Many students in Rockford, starting at Wilson Middle School, were influenced during her long career as a math teacher. She was proud to be the first teacher hired for Guilford High School for its opening in 1963. At Guilford, she taught all levels of math from basic through advanced as well as computer programming. She is fondly remembered for her teaching ability and dedication as well as being impeccably dressed. During her retirement in 1994, she married Douglas Smith, a widowed Guilford chemistry and physics teacher. Together they had many happy years enjoying family, theater, symphony, as well as extensive travels that took them to all seven continents. In addition to her husband Doug, she is survived by her step-family: Glen Smith (Terri), Alice Stuhlmacher (Jim), Linda Smith (Jim Chamings), Michelle Stuhlmacher (Bijan Fakhri), and Anna Stuhlmacher. Special thanks to the caring staff of Wesley Willows. In lieu of flowers, passing along kindness to someone in need is a fitting remembrance. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory assisted the family. To share memoires or online condolences, visit www.fitzgeraldfh.com.
