Marcia E. Blassage

June 20, 1946 — August 24, 2024

Rockford

It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Marcia, a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She peacefully departed this world surrounded by her family on August 24th, 2024. Her battle with a terminal illness showed her courage and strength in facing life’s challenges.

Born to Arthur and Helen Hammar, June 20, 1946 in Chicago, IL. After graduating from Maple Park High School, the road led her to Rockford, IL. She enrolled at Rockford College and completed her Bachelors Degree in 1968. She pursued a career in Social Work. She was hired and worked until retirement at Singer Mental Health Center. She dedicated her life’s work in helping and guiding troubled adolescents in the local region. She was respected for her diligence and genuine concern for the well being of the children.

She married her friend and love, Gerald Blassage in 1985 who predated her in death in 2009.

Marcia’s hobbies and interests helped define who she was.

She and Jerry had an enthusiasm for traveling. They enjoyed trips to Alaska and Russia as well as many shorter trips that often included visits to antique and vintage shops. And without a doubt returning with very unique items or a rare find.

Marcia had a wonderful fascination and took special joy in her gardening. She was an active member of the Blackhawk Iris Society and, in retirement, worked several years at a local garden shop, Village Green. She was truly in her element, sharing her knowledge of the many beautiful perennials they offered.

She loved horseback riding; was an avid Cubs fan; had a flair for sewing and a passion for art.

Marcia will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her beloved son Mathew Langoussis. Her step children George (Trisha) Blassage, Mark (Tara) Blassage, Pete (Kathie) Blassage, Cricket (Jon) Powell, Amy (Ed) Sachs. Her grandchildren Aubreyanna Langoussis, Cody Langoussis, Tyler Funk, Mikaelyn Blassage, Austin (Morgan) Blassage, Jensen Blassage, Aiden Blassage, Cooper Blassage, Alyssa Blassage, Emma Powell, Elliot Powell, Alex Powell, Zack and Maddi. Her great grandchildren Hazel Blassage and Ozias Funk.

She is predeceased by father Arthur Hammar, mother Helen (Larson) Hammar, her sister Bonnie Rich, and her adored dog Luna.

Special thanks to Northern Illinois Hospice for their partnership, care, and compassion especially Marti, Paige, and Erica.

We will always carry Marcia’s memory in our hearts.

There will be a private family burial. We are planning a Celebration of Life with the date and time to be determined.
