M. Eileen Lucas

M. Eileen Lucas, of Palatine, a former 50-plus year resident of Rockford, died peacefully at home on January 22, 2010. She was born April 19, 1920 in Baldwin, IA to Emil J. and Margaret (nee McCann) Maiers. Eileen was raised in Dubuque, IA where she met her husband Robert (Luke). They were married February 28, 1949. Eileen and Luke moved to Rockford in 1955 and were happy West-siders, raising their three children and making many lasting friendships. Eileens working career began in Dubuque, where for 5 years, she was the society editor of the Dubuque Telegraph Herald. While raising her three children in Rockford, she resumed her profession, working for 17 years for the Rockford Register Republic, and then the Rockford Register Star, covering the Winnebago County Courts and Rockford politics. She was a member of the Newspaper Guild of America and the Rockford Catholic Womens Auxiliary. Eileen was an avid reader and loved her bridge clubs, Friday night fish fries and most of all, spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, two sisters, Colette Sorvillo and Kathleen McCarty. In addition to her husband of nearly 61 years, she is survived by her children, Rob (Donna) Lucas, Hoffman Estates, Peter (Janet) Lucas, Roscoe and daughter, Ann (Ray) Franczak, Palatine. She is also survived by seven grandchildren who adored her: Scott Lucas, Palatine, Lauren (Tony) Barnhart, Scottsdale, AZ, Allison Lucas, Hoffman Estates, Jessica (Nick) Johnson, Rockton, Shane Lucas, Ames, IA, David Franczak, Los Angeles and Elizabeth Franczak, Bloomington, IN. Her loving sister-in-law, Nancy Spahn of Hartford, WI also survives her, along with numerous nieces and nephews.



A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation from 6-8 p.m. Monday in Fitzgerald Funeral Home amp; Crematory, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. Visitation also from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice amp; Palliative Care of Northeastern Illinois, 410 S. Hager Ave, Barrington, IL 60010.
