Louis “Lou” Samuel Cero, 94, Rockford, passed away Friday, November 17, 2017, at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center. He was born April 24, 1923, in Alton, the son of Charles and Alice (Giacone) Cero. Lou was a Navy veteran serving during WWII. He served as a second loader aboard the aircraft carrier USS Bataan in the Pacific. He married Susan J. Cooper in Rockford on April 11, 1953. She passed away December 12, 2007. Lou was a machine tool assembler at Barber Coleman retiring in 1985 after 35 years of service. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Lou enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his friends but most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters, who were the joy of his life.
Survived by his son, Jim Cero and his daughter, Laurie (Russ) Davitt, both of Rockford; his granddaughters, Kelsey (Peter) Bierdeman and Jenna Davitt; his sister-in-law, Josephine Cero; nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, his brothers, Alex (Rose), Jasper, and James (Pearl) Cero and his sister, Alice (Jim) Arnone.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, November 25, 2017, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4401 Highcrest Rd. Rockford. Burial in Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until time of service on Saturday at the church. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Mortuary, Mulford Chapel, 1860 S. Mulford Rd.
