Lorraine (Curia) Maffei, 94, of Rockford, died at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at her home and in the presence of family. Lorraine was born to Nicolas and Helene Curia on January 22, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, older sister to Claire and Helene. As a teenager, she started working in the department store on 5th Avenue in Manhatten, where she was quickly promoted to Buyer. On March 10, 1951, Lorraine married the love of her life and soulmate, Lou Maffei on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Together, Lorraine and Lou had three sons, Wayne, Mark, and Glen. They purchased a failing factory which, under their direction, grew into a thriving business. They were part owners of the Rockford Lightning and members of Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club. In retirement, Lorraine remained active in her community, enjoyed dancing, golfing, and playing bridge, and became neighbors with both her cousin, Harold, and her sister and best friend, Claire. Lorraine and Claire’s banter in public garnered smiles and laughter from passersby and led to multiple requests to post videos of their interactions on the internet. In her final years, Lorraine spent time with her son Mark and other family. She listened to audiobooks daily, and enjoyed singing and dancing to music from her youth.
Predeceased by her son, Glen Maffei; husband, Lou Maffei; and sisters, Claire Vrola and Helene Tice. Survivors include her sons, Wayne (Sharon) Maffei of Baraboo, WI and Mark Maffei of Rockford, IL; grand children Michael (Katie), Bryan (Rosie), Mandy (Brett), Eric, Alex, and Kellé; great grand children Anthony, Colin, Lily, Camryn, Hayden, and Sage.
Services will be held at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematorium on April 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Natural Land Institute.
