Lois J. Johnson, 84, of Rockford, passed peacefully in her home with her children at her side on Friday, August 4, 2017. She was born in Chicago on October 20, 1932; daughter of Rudolph and Edna (Klotz) Berg. She was a graduate of Steinmetz High School in Chicago and attended Carthage College. Lois was married to her loving husband Sherwin E. Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church on August 18, 1951. They spent 56 wonderful years together before Sherwin’s passing on October 28, 2007. Lois worked for the Rockford School District for over 10 years as a Teacher’s Aide and Library Aide, and she spent many Saturdays singing at weddings at the Church By The Side Of The Road in Rockton. Lois was a very active member at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, and was a devoted member of the choir and served as Choir Director for 7 years. She was a member of the Rockford Lutheran Choral Union and appeared in the Starlight Theatre production of Carousel. Lois’ love and music have touched many during her life, and she will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, teacher, and friend.
Lois is survived by her children, Sheryl (Marshall) Nelson, David (Debra) Johnson, Grant Johnson, and Cynthia (Bruce) Alonzo; grandchildren, Troy (Jessica) Nelson, Tyler (Ellen) Nelson, Trent (Martha) Nelson, Trevor Nelson, Michael (Michaela) Johnson, Matthew Johnson, Hannah Johnson, Grant Johnson Jr., Mogen Johnson, Ameliah Johnson, Kira Alonzo, Bianca Alonzo; 11 great grandchildren; and one niece and nephew.
She is predeceased by her husband, Sherwin; brother, Robert Berg; and granddaughter, Savannah Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, August 14, 2017 at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 2715 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL, 61109; with Pastor Scott Benolkin officiating. Visitation will be held at Church from 9:30 a.m. until time of service on Monday. A private family burial will be held at Scandinavian Cemetery prior to the service.
