Leonard O. Jarl

Leonard Oscar Jarl, 91, of Rockford, died on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Leonard was born in Rockford on April 4, 1925, to Oscar Theodore Jarl and Agnes Pauline (nee Johnson) Jarl. A few years later Leonard and his parents returned to Smaland, Sweden to work the family farm, and eventually returned to Rockford at the age of 7. During his senior year at East High School, Leonard enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during the Second World War in the South Pacific. Leonard worked for National Lock as a Tool and Die maker, retiring after 30 years, and was an active member at the Elim Baptist Church. He was an animal lover and enjoyed taking the family dogs for long walks in Alpine Park. Leonard enjoyed long rides on his bicycle, and sailing. He built two boats that he would sail with his family on Lake Delavan. Leonard will be missed dearly, and the love and memories that he gave will be cherished always.

He is survived by his two daughters, LaRae (Bill) Larson and Leanna (Gary) Steele; grandchildren, Brandon (Kate) Steele and Kelli (Dan) Torluemke; great grandson, Gabriel Torluemke; former wife and friend, Helen Jarl; special friend, Connie Berglund; and several nieces and cousins. Leonard is predeceased by his parents, and his brother Maynard Jarl.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017, at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL, 61108, with the Reverend Dean Parker officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service on Monday. Burial and Military Honors to follow at Arlington Cemetery. Memorials to the family for a fund to be established at a later date.
