Leighton D Wignall, 91, of Rockford died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Presence Saint Anne Center. Born October 1, 1924 in Mystic, Iowa, the son of Harry and Nellie Mae (Ducey) Wignall. A United States Veteran of the Navy serving in Hawaii during WWII. Married his loving wife Helen Lorraine Brazzell in 1950 in Rockford at Messiah Lutheran Church. Leighton was the proud owner of Allied Painting and Decorating and worked until he was 75. He was an avid baseball fan and loved the Boston Red Sox and the Iowa Hawkeyes, enjoyed fishing and was a member the Navy Club and Vets Roll. Leighton was most proud of his recent trip with Vets Roll to Washington DC last May. He was honored and delighted to be with his friends and comrades from that era. He was a kind, hardworking husband, father and grandfather who will be deeply missed. Survivors include his daughter, Lisa (Christopher) Biwer of Owatonna, MN; son, Steven ( Shelly) Wignall of Olathe, KS; grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer, Sarah, Steven Jr., Danielle, Ashley and Aaron; great grandchildren, Tyler, Josef, Brittany, Emmalynn, Adaline, Aiden, Ariana, Kya, Nolan, Broxton, Otto, Kyler, Presley and Bianca; sister, Donelda Olsasky of Des Moines, IA; numerous nieces and nephews and his best friend since 1st grade, Robert “Bob” Armstrong of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2004; brother, John Wignall and sister, Vera Milburn.
Funeral service Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, 3910 N. Rockton Ave with Rev. Dean Parker officiating. Visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Interment will be held in Willwood Burial Park.
