Laverne Elmer Mattson

LaVerne Elmer Mattson (101) of Rockford, IL passed away on June 18th 2023, in the comfort of his Rockford home after a life well lived.

Laverne was born to his parents Elmer and Hazel (Johnson) Mattson in Seward, IL. Laverne was a proud and easy-going family man who enjoyed watching sports, talking about his life adventures, spending time with family, and exploring casinos. He enjoyed placing a good bet, and his good luck helped him live a rich and long life. Laverne served in the Army from 1941 to 1945. Following his military career, Laverne was a teamster that drove truck for Staley Trucking until he retired in 1979. Laverne spent his retirement enjoying his time with his family and friends.

Laverne was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Hazel Mattson (Johnson), his beloved wife Elsie (Keene) Mattson, his sister Ethel (Larson), his daughter Sharon, and son in law Bill Darnell. He will be greatly missed by his surviving daughter Linda Mattson, grandsons Christopher (Nicki) Darnell and Nicholas (Joan) Darnell, his great grandchildren Paige Newton, Leo and Zoe Darnell, as well as several cousins and friends.

A visitation service will be held on Tuesday June 27th at Fitzgerald’s Funeral Home 3910 N. Rockton Ave, IL from 11:00am to 12:00pm.

Flowers may be sent to the funeral home, with additional memorials sent to his daughter Linda Mattson.
