LaVerne Clayton, 85 of Rockford, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009 in his sons home. Born Aug. 27, 1924 in Beloit, WI son of Albert L. and Esther (Christianson) Clayton. Veteran of the United States Navy serving during WWII on the battleship USS Mississippi. Graduate of Layton School of Art in Milwaukee where he received a degree in graphic design. Married his loving wife Pauline Magnuson. He retired in 1991 after working 44 years as a visual designer for Amerock Corporation and received several government patents for his designs. Traveling and camping with his family in state parks throughout the country was a favorite hobby of Lavernes, however traveling with his choral group took additional time and dedication. He sang and traveled with Svea Soner Chorus, an all male Swedish chorus, where he performed worldwide and was currently the oldest living member. He is a long time member of United Lutheran Church and other hobbies he enjoyed with his family included going to Cubs games, stock car races and watching funny cars at the track. He would also get together with his buddies on Friday nights to play cards. He was true to his country, his family and friends and he will be missed by all. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to OSF Hospice and Home Care for their care and comfort.
Survivors include his sons, Brian (Char) Clayton of Caledonia and Jeff Clayton of Crystal Lake; granddaughters, Amanda and Sarah Clayton and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline and brother, Ken Clayton. Funeral service Monday, Nov. 9, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at United Lutheran Church, 3630 N. Rockton Ave. , with Pastor Norwood Knutson officiating. Interment in Scandinavian Cemetery. Visitation Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009 from 1-4 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel 3910 N.
