Larry P. Slick, 76, of Rockford died Monday, August 22, 2016 at Rosewood Care Center. Born April 20, 1940 in Mt. Carroll, the son of Fred and Armand (Palmer) Slick. Married Ellen Gavin Newman on June 24, 1989 in Freeport. Larry was a teacher and had the pleasure of educating students in Forreston, Leaf River, Wilson, West High School and retired from Guilford High School in 1993. A friend of Bill W. for 30 years, a member of the NRA, the Stephenson County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Beloit Riffle Club. He enjoyed hunting, target shooting and farming and spending time with his family and friends. Larry has joined the angels above and is once again holding the hand of his beloved son Tony. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to: The Palliative Care and Hospice teams of OSF St. Anthony Medical Center and Rosewood Care Center for their compassionate care of Larry in his final days.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen of Rockford; daughter, Wendy Slick of Rockford; step-sons, Adam (Angie) Newman of Freeport, Aaron (Tammy) Newman of Myrtle Beach, SC, Andrew (Jodi) Newman of Johnson Creek, WI and Alec (Joy) Newman of Mt. Horeb, WI; grandchildren, Hunter Marie, Zachary, Morgan, Tristan, Kody, Zachary and Josh McHugh, Aaron Michael, Alexys, Anna, Ben, Ellie, Ava, Maya and Emma; brothers, F. Lee (Rosemary) Slick of Palos Heights and Jerry (Diane Perpetua) Slick of Jupiter, FL; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; son-in-law, Tim Davidson of Rockford, special friend, Larry Turner of Rockford and friend, Joyce Fisher of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Capt. Anthony Y. Slick, USMC in 1996.
Mass Saturday, August 27, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church, 1400 Kiwanis Dr., Freeport, IL 61032 with a visitation from 9 a.m. until time of prayer at 11:15 a.m. at church. A private inurnment will be held in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Freeport.
