Larry P. Benner, 59, of Rockford, died after a brief illness on August 23, 2011 in his home. Born March 17, 1952 in Rockford the son of Virgil and Patricia Benner. Attended West High School and served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Married his soul mate and high school sweetheart Gloria Hernandez on September 15, 1969 in Memphis, TN. As a young man Larry worked for Lou Bachrodt and at the Sky Room at the airport. He went on to work for the railroad in 1975 and was currently working for Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railroad as a tract inspector. A member of St. James Catholic Church and The Brotherhood Maintenance of Way. Larry was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, always looking for an adventure. He also enjoyed racing pigeons in his early days and playing golf. He especially loved spending time with his family and watching his wonderful grandchildren grow. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Heartland Hospice for all they did for Larry. Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Rockford; son, Larry (Cindy) Benner of Streator; daughters, Jennifer (Justin) Cellitti and Heather Benner both of Rockford; grandchildren, Larry II, Jacob, Lucas and Breanna Benner, Adriana and Andrew Cellitti and Isaac Benner; sisters, Lori (Tom) Grant of TX, Lela (Delbert) Ihns of IA, Carol (Chuck) Steffen of Rockford, Ruth (Ray) Grizzle of TN; brothers, Lee Benner and Donnie (Dee) Belcher and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Geraldine Rhodes. Funeral Mass Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 428 N. Second St. Rockford. Visitation Friday, August 26 from 5 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory, Mulford Chapel 1860 S. Mulford Rd. with a rosary service to be recited at 7 p.m. Visitation continues on Saturday in church from 9 a.m. until time of prayer at 9:45. Interment will be held in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
