Kirk R. Journy passed away on December 9, 2023, which would have been his father’s 100th birthday, surrounded by his family. Born on April 16, 1960, to parents James and Marjorie (Lyons) Journy in Rockford, Illinois, he was the ninth of ten children. Growing up, Kirk was quite reserved, but was always known for his kindness, generosity, and will be greatly missed by many.
Kirk took great pride in enlisting in the U.S. Navy and serving his country. Being a Gulf War veteran, he spent months at a time on nuclear submarines, including the USS Andrew Jackson and USS George C. Marshall. His proudest moment was receiving his Submarine Warfare pin (dolphins) which was a hard earned badge recognizing his dedicated service. Above all else, Kirk was greatly loved by his family, earning the title of ‘favorite uncle’. Every year around Christmas, he would list out all the nieces and nephews’ names and their gifts, ensuring no one received the same one. Kirk was a child at heart and took joy in playing ‘harmless pranks’ on his siblings, nieces, and nephews. He was most enthused on the 4th of July, his favorite holiday, when he got to throw handfuls of candy and toys at the children passing by.
Kirk will be remembered for his resilience and strength throughout his treacherous battle with cancer, never complaining or showing fear.
He is survived by siblings Leslie (Michael) Wise, Laurie (Ray) Vieth, Mollie (Rick) Teckenburg, Jane (Geoff) Brook, Tim (Diana) Journy, Lee (Bob) Conzen, Ann (Brent) Rogers, Tom (Jill) Journy, Paul (Mary) Iverson, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brother, Martin Journy.
