Karol Ann Fricke

June 22, 1969 — November 15, 2016

Karol Ann Fricke, 47, a lifelong resident of Rockford died unexpectedly on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at UW Madison Hospital. Born June 22, 1969 the daughter of Karl and Kathleen Fricke. Graduated from Boylan Catholic High School class of 1986 and went on to attend Rock Valley College receiving her Police Science degree and then to University of Illinois for her PTI training.
Karol was a 24-year veteran of the force, started her career with the department in 1992 as a patrol officer and most recently, worked as a Community Services Officer assigned to District 3. Well-known for her active engagement in countless community meetings, activities and events, Officer Fricke was known for her willingness to engage, and her direct, no-nonsense approach blended with a warm smile, and mix of humor and wit.
Officer Fricke was an Operation Shattered Stars and Rockford Police Department Peer Supporter, a volunteer program that trains active and retired officers to lend support, share experiences and offer advice to fellow officers in need. In noting her interest to become a member of the pilot Peer-to-Peer Program that launched this year, Officer Fricke described herself as approachable, honest, caring, and willing to be called upon at any time in a crisis, a sentiment echoed by her fellow officers and colleagues.
Off the clock, Karol was known for her love of family, her love of animals, her love of great food, and her zest for life. Having received a kidney transplant four years ago from her wife, Beth, Karol was passionate about authentically living each day, and had a unique understanding of the fragility each day brings. She could often be found with friends and family at her beloved eatery, Backyard Grill & Bar in Loves Park, or on a road trip adventure.
Survivors include her best friend and wife, Beth Heuer; daughter by choice, Hannah Poorman; sister, Karen (Louis) DeMarco; brothers, Dan (Jean) Fricke and Dave (Marge) Fricke; nephews, Karl, Gabriel and Louis Jr, Lucas, Scott (Chandra), Andrew (Erin) and Zachary (Courtney); great nieces, Grace and Breanna and special aunts, uncles and cousins and many dear friends.
