Karen Ann James, 83, of Greenville, SC, formerly of Rockford IL, was called home to be with the Lord Saturday, December 2, 2023. She passed away peacefully, in her home surrounded by her family. Karen was born March 13, 1940, the daughter of Stanton and Lucille Shores (Wright). Karen met her husband Terry as he was home for college summer break, delivering mail in her neighborhood. They were married at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on March 7, 1959, and together had five lovely children. Karen was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. Her entire life she devoted time to taking care of family members, while volunteering as a Sunday School teacher, Girl Scout leader, and member of Ski Broncs waterski club. She enjoyed the outdoors, being at the lake, trips to Fort Myers Beach, and her Bassett Hound dogs. After husband Terry retired, in 2003 they moved fulltime to their waterfront house in Wisconsin on Lake Camelot. After many years in Wisconsin, they moved to Greenville, SC in 2014 to be closer to family. Following Terry’s passing in 2016, Karen fulfilled some of her bucket list travel destinations by visiting Washington DC., touring New York City, and exploring Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons with son Scott and his wife Monica. She also enjoyed trips to Litchfield beach and loved to walk the sands for seashells.
Karen is loved and will be missed deeply by all. Her five children include, Kathy Hawkins-predeceased (John) of Colorado Springs, Jana Brackett (Chuck) of Rockford, Andrea Sutcliffe (Ken) of Dallas, Jody Sneed (Mike) of Rockford and Scott James (Monica) of Greenville, SC, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Karen previously led ”Puppy Play” at her retirement center in coordination with the Greenville Humane Society. Memorials in her honor can be given to the Greenville Humane Society, 305 Airport Rd, Greenville, SC 29607. A private graveside service will be held for the immediate family at Owen Township Cemetery. Arrangements by Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 1860 S Mulford Rd Rockford, IL 61108.
