John A. "Butch" York, passed away on July 31, 2024, in his home surrounded by his loved ones after a long courageous battle. Born on October 10, 1943, in Rockford, son of Austin and Mary York. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend.
John was a hardworking roofer, and foreman with Carlson Roofing for over 43 years. He married the love of his life, Linda M. Rostan on March 7, 1964. They were blessed to celebrate over 60 years together and created a family that continues to grow. He cherished his catholic faith and was a member of St Edward Catholic Church. John had a passion for sports, cheering (and moaning) for the White Sox and Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed playing golf with friends after retirement and spending time at home watching the birds that visited him often. He cherished time spent at his grandchildren events the most. John found the most joy in creating lasting memories with those he loved. Family was at the center of John's world, and he prioritized spending time with his loved ones above all else. He said he had the “best family” and was proud of the legacy he and Linda created.
He will be dearly missed by his wife Linda York; daughters Kimberly (Rudy) Schleicher, Wendy York (Kent Kohlbacher), and Erin (Jason) Smith; grandchildren Justin (Briana), Savanna (Matt), Dylan (Kelly), Mason, Landon, and Audrina, great-grandchildren Arabella, Sarina, Valentina, Priscilla, Dean, Eloise, and Caleb. John is predeceased by his parents; Austin and Mary; son Johnny York; brother Ed; sisters Margaret, Shirley, and Grace; stepmother Ethel; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends who were touched by his kindness. John's legacy of love for family and dedication to hard work will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Bruce Stiles, Dr. Nameer Mardini, Dr. Harneet Gahley, and the entire team at the Carbone Cancer Center for the care they provided that allowed for every extra day John had with his family. Additionally, the family would like to thank Serenity Hospice Care, especially, Sheila, for the support provided to John and his family during a very difficult time. You were all a blessing.
