Rockford

John Z. Szleszinski, 85, passed away at home on January 25, 2025, in Rockford, Illinois. Born on August 26, 1939, in Strickland, Wisconsin, son to Felix and Anna (Schowron) Szleszinski. He graduated from Weyerhaeuser High School in 1957, and on October 10, 1959 he married the love of his life, Ruth Peterson. Together, they built a life in Rockford, Illinois filled with love and shared experiences, enriching the lives of those lucky enough to know them. An active member of his community, John served as a longtime parishioner and usher at St. James Catholic Church. He was a comforting presence, always ready to assist, even walking parishioners back to their cars after Saturday services—a small but significant act of kindness that characterized his gentle soul. Throughout his life, John was known for his infectious sense of humor. He always had a joke to share and a smile to offer, bringing laughter to those around him. His love for life extended beyond mere enjoyment; he found great happiness in making others laugh as well. Throughout his life, John embraced his hobbies with enthusiasm. He found joy in visiting the St. Croix casino, and the news of the Hard Rock Casino opening in Rockford excited him immensely, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for entertainment. Additionally, motorcycle rides were a lifelong passion, offering him the freedom to roam and explore the roads that beckoned him. John had an appreciation for nature and outdoor activities, particularly hunting and fishing in Weyerhaeuser, Wisconsin. Later in life, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of feeding the wildlife around his house.

He will be missed by those who loved him most, his wife of 65 years, Ruth; their sons Randall Szleszinski, Carl (Kathy) Szleszinski, and Daniel Szleszinski; grandchildren Tawny (Jon) Decorie, Trisha (Thavi) Nhanesana, Jon (Carly) Szleszinski, Megan Szleszinski, and Ryan Szleszinski; numerous great grandkids, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Gregory Szleszinski; parents Felix and Anna; his brothers Leon (Darlene) Szleszinski, Rev. Father Peter Szleszinski, Ignace (Helen) Szleszinski, and Felix (Mae) Szleszinski.
