John Sandona

John Peter Paul Sandona, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021. He was born to Jennie and Frank Sandona on May 15, 1939. John graduated from St. Thomas Catholic High School and served in the United States Army. He married the love of his life, Gerry, on November 26, 1966. He was a parishioner at St. Anthony church and later Holy Family church.

John spent most of his career in sales (Warner Lambert) and owned his own shipping business (Mail It Here). John loved bocce and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He was proud of his Italian heritage. You could always find John gathered around a table with family and friends. He loved to share old stories, talk politics, and tell jokes. Whether at his home, a family member’s home, Panera, St. Anne’s, the Venetian Club, or other various spots around town, you were always guaranteed good company, a good story, and many laughs when you were with John.

John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 54 years, Gerry; his three daughters, Dawn (Rick) Kramer, Heather (Jim Kostka), Mary (Diego Ortega); his brother, Mark (Jane) Sandona; his three grandchildren, Megan (Mitchell) McNeily, Joseph, and Anthony Kramer; his great granddaughter, Eleanor McNeily; good friend and brother-in-law, Jim Marinaro; and his nieces and nephews.

John was predeceased by his father, Frank, and his mother, Jennie. Special thanks to Anam for the wonderful care they gave to John.

A Memorial Visitation will be held Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Rd. Rockford, IL 61008.
