John R. 'Jack' Burton, 71, Rockford, passed away on Monday, August 12, 2013. He was born in Plattsmouth, Nebraska on March 5, 1942; the son of John W. and Margaret E. (McDermott) Burton. John graduated from West High School. He was a proud US veteran serving his country as a Green Beret and Army medic through two tours during Vietnam. Jack went on to further his education after his service to his country; he received his bachelors degree in pre-med studies from Sangamon State University. He worked for Carpenters Union Local 105 for more than 20 years. He also served as a union representative for the Northern Illinois area. Jack had a wonderful sense of adventure, he enjoyed the outdoors; hunting, fishing and camping were among his favorite activities. He was also a very talented artist and loved to draw. Jack will be missed by all who loved him and those who knew him.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Hielkema; step-son, Justin (Betty Jo) Miller; sisters, Mary Burton and Kathy (Steve) Koteski; mother-in-law, Nancy Standen. Predeceased by his parents; brothers, James W. Burton and Joseph E. Burton; sisters, Elizabeth Giglio and Cindy Burton.
Memorial service at 11:00 am on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at Unitarian Universalist Church, 4848 Turner St. Visitation from 10:00 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family. To extend condolences visit www.fitzgeraldfh.com
