John E. Rossato Sr., 97, passed away at home on February 11, 2025, in Rockford, Illinois. Born October 27, 1927, son to John and Bessie (Gibbs) Rossato. John proudly answered the call of duty at the age of 17, enlisting in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His heroic journey spanned from 1944 to 1946, he was recalled to active duty during the Korean Conflict in order to rehab ships in Florida, and he continued to serve in the reserves until 1952. John's commitment to his country was unwavering, and he wore his military service as a badge of honor, exemplifying the very spirit of patriotism. He met his beloved Marilyn McGinnis on a blind date, and they wed on April 24, 1947. They shared 52 wonderful years of memories before her passing in January of 2000. Throughout his life's journey, John donned many hats across numerous industries, embodying the hardworking spirit that underpins the American dream. His career saw him thrive as a molder, General Foreman, and Traffic controller, with aspirations that even took him to California. He ultimately concluded his working life at Gunite in Rockford in 1993, leaving behind a trail of memories and contributions that shaped the communities in which he worked. Among his proudest accomplishments were his dedicated years with the Roscoe Post 2955, where he significantly impacted his local veteran community. As Postmaster, he demonstrated leadership with grace and integrity, serving honorably on the Honor Guard and the Color Guard. He made such an impact with the Roscoe Post that they honored him with a heartfelt plaque outside of the Roscoe Post. John was deeply committed to commemorating the sacrifices made by his fellow military family members, culminating in his heartfelt tradition of throwing the wreath into the river for Pearl Harbor Day for many years. In recognition of his invaluable contributions and steadfast dedication, he was honored with a medallion at the Hard Rock in 2024 alongside other veterans and Rosie the Riveters, a testament to his indomitable spirit and service to our country.
